![]() ![]() As I have always done upgrades before (even when everything didn't go smoothly, I could always boot and take care of the issues), is there anyone who can give me some guidance on the steps to accomplish this? I know I would need to backup /home, but what about config files I may have changed? How should these be handled? Are there other things I should be checking that I don't know about, etc.? Any help would be very much appreciated. So, I seem to be left with no options except to move to another platform or do a fresh install. Since I depend on Darktable, and they no longer support 14.04, I have to upgrade to get release 2.2. I could not boot and had to restore my backup. Things ended as before with the system in an unusable state (the message was something like that). ![]() I made sure I had the latest updates prior to beginning the update process. If I knew it had been improved since my disaster (early this year, Spring I believe), I might give it another try.Īfter making sure my system was as vanilla as possible (PPAs removed, any things I had changed as relates to config files, etc,), I once again tried to upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 (圆4). ![]() I'm not really into a fresh install, but I had such a bad experience with the Upgrade attempt that I just don't want to deal with the hassle. ![]() The PPAs could be removed prior to upgrade, but I think the Upgrade process is supposed to disable those anyway. I use Vuescan to scan film strips and photos. deb, but Vuescan is just a folder with some files. I believe Moneydance is distributed as a. I also have some programs that are not distributed any way except from the developer, i.e., Vuescan and Moneydance. I do use some PPA's, so I'm not sure if that caused any issues. I have always done upgrades before with only minor issues. I had so many errors that I couldn't boot. Both are extensively tested and work very well.įYI: Most upgrade failures can be easily prevented or fixed. Some gurus in this forum swear by fresh-installs, others swear by upgrades. It's amazing what you discover that you don't use anymore.īest guidance depends on your comfort level and skills. If you want to stick to a fresh install, I recommend a full backup, and then selective restore file-by-file. ![]()
